Does Luck Factor in Career Success?

Early in my career, I interviewed for a job at a magazine, at a company I really wanted to work for. I got to the second interview but didn’t get the job. I was disappointed. Later, I wound up working for another one of the company’s magazines. A short while after I started, the magazine I had originally interviewed for folded. Talk about dodging a bullet.

Call it fate, luck, karma, kismet or just being in the right place at the right time, but I’ve had a lot of these sorts of breaks throughout my working life. (Hey, I’m a Sagittarius, after all.) And I’m not the only one. When we asked Monster members what role luck played in their successes, their responses indicated that something beyond just hard work has helped lead a lot of people down a good career path. Check out some of their stories.

So on this St. Patrick’s Day eve, what do you think? Do the gods of good fortune really play an important part in career bliss? Post your comments below. And if you’d like the luck of the Irish to rub off on your job search, check out The Resume Expert’s take on a leprechaun’s resume.

Gratitude practices

Yesterday I posted about the positive effect a habitual focus on gratitude can have. If you want to go beyond a simple gratitude journal (with a daily commitment to writing down what you’re grateful for), here is a page with a whole bucketload of additional ideas for exploring gratitude.

10 ways to improve your life, right now

My clients come to me because they want to find passion in their career. But often that career focus expands to a bigger picture. Why? Because as much as we might like to think so, our lives don’t unfold in disconnected silos. What is happening in one part impacts the others.

What is happening in our work life will impact what is happening in our relationships. What is happening with our health will impact our work life. It’s all interconnected.

One thing I often look at with my clients is, “OK, if I can’t make a career change right now, how can I make life better?” Rather than sitting miserably waiting for life to be perfect later, it’s about taking a proactive approach to improving life so they have more energy to put into creating the future they want.

I ran across this article that offers ten ideas for ways to improve your life, right now. Lots of readily implementable ideas. Read the article for the full picture, but in a nutshell the ideas are:

1.) Improve Your Attitude

2.) Smell the Roses

3.) Help Somebody

4.) Get More Restful Sleep

5.) Improve Your Health

6.) Get Your Finances Under Control

7.) Set Goals for Yourself

8.) Learn Something New

9.) Get Organized

10.) Eliminate A Bad Habit

Regardless of where you are in life, there’s always room to refine and improve it. I encourage you to go through these ideas, find one that resonates with you, and find a way to apply it.
